About the Image
On October 16, 1916, Margaret Sanger opened what would come to be called The Brownsville Clinic, the first birth control clinic in the United States. Located at 46 Amboy Street in Brooklyn, New York, it was illegal from the outset, and intended by Sanger to function as sort of a sophisticated media campaign where her eventual arrest for violating New York state law would give her attention in the press and a platform to keep birth control in the public discourse.
