What's going on here?
Medgar Evers was assassinated in front of his home in Jackson, Mississippi, carrying NAACP t-shirts that read "Jim Crow Must Go" on the same day Anne Frank would have turned 34; in the same year Martin Luther King, Jr. — who was born four months before Anne Frank — gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Not inconsequentially, it was also the same year Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique. And the same year The Beatles released their first and second albums — that second album coming just a mere eight months after the first, on the same day JFK was assassinated. That infamous year, of course, was 1963. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 would be passed two years later; MLK himself would be assassinated in 1968.

History often rhymes, and this time we're living through the crescendo of the backlash to that era of tumultuous progress that's been mounting since the ink on that all too consequential bill was still wet in 1965. ​But this time, we're trapped in a technological hellscape full of algorithms that have infected every square inch of the devices we’ve come to rely on to function. Algorithms that simultaneously seek to trap, surveil, replace — and ultimately destroy us.

Eyes glued to our little screens, we watch slack-jawed as a mother is shot in the head three times on a snowy suburban Minnesota street. As children clutching stuffies are bombed in their beds with money withheld from our paychecks. As the Supreme Court of the United States guts the Voting Rights Act, and the President of the United States loots our federal government, manipulates the market, skyrockets our costs, and openly partakes in insider trading alongside his children — consider that his stock trading volume since his last inauguration is 100x that of Nancy Pelosi over the course of the last decade: Trump made 21,000+ trades in 2025 alone, versus Pelosi's ~213 total trades since 2014. In 2026, the Confederate states gerrymander and impose poll taxes while the 75-year-old Senate minority leader attends fashion marketing events and sings protest songs, and a marketer writes a press release about it.

'What should we do?' we furiously type into the shadow-banning voids of Mark Zuckerberg's and Larry Ellison's propaganda platforms. 'Who's going to save us?' we appeal to Internet strangers and content creators and our sitting congresspeople on book tours and 116-daylong fully paid mental health leaves; reading every response in a thread-based digital conversation we'd never dare to have in the bleachers at the kids' game, or at the PTA meeting, or Pilates class, or the politely vapid first few minutes of a Zoom meeting while you're waiting for everyone more important than you to join.

Which brings us back to the shirts.

There's always something we can do, even if it feels small. There's always an important conversation we're avoiding. There's always more to learn. We can't continue to bifurcate our lives out of existence, protesting on the weekends and Claude-ing for the corporate oligarchs architecting our own oppression Monday through Friday, and we surely can't fight our way out of this mess if we're looking to our right and left, instead of up at the top.
